The ABIM Research Pathway of the University of Washington (UW) Internal Medicine Residency Program is designed to provide exceptional clinical and scientific training to the future leaders of academic medicine and biomedical science. UW encourages all aspiring physician-scientist trainees interested in Internal Medicine to consider the pathway for their clinical and postdoctoral training.

Program Description

The UW Internal Medicine Residency Program has long been regarded as one of the most outstanding training programs for internal medicine in one of the top departments of internal medicine[1] in the country. Residents at UW see the full spectrum of disease across three hospitals, from academic (UW) to community safety net (Harborview) to Veterans Affairs (VA Puget Sound), and are exposed to complex cases from the over 1 million square mile/2 million square kilometer Washington-Wyoming-Alaska-Montana-Idaho (WWAMI)[2][3] area, for which UW Medical Center is the primary tertiary and quaternary referral center.

Scientifically, UW has a long history of scientific excellence. Seven Nobel Prizes, including five in Physiology or Medicine, have been awarded to UW researchers or former faculty, along with dozens of other prestigious awards in across the spectrum of scientific research[4]. UW has consistently been one of the top five schools in terms of total research funding since 1969, with over $1.6 billion in total awards in fiscal year 2017, including over $200 million to the Department of Medicine, the second highest at UW[5]. UW has been in the top five for NIH and NSF funding for over 10 years[6], and the Department of Medicine is one of the top 10 in terms of NIH funding nationwide[7].

The Internal Medicine Research Track at UW combines the clinical and scientific excellence at UW and provides an idea environment for the aspiring physician-scientist. Upo to four UW residents may participate in the track in any year. Trainees may elect to short track, completing internal medicine training in two years before moving to fellowship training (or directly to research efforts) at UW or another institution. UW will support three years of protected research training following clinical training. Between 2001 and 2016, 40 trainees completed the program and 100% of these trainees matched to a subspecialty fellowship, the majority (78%) choosing to complete their training at UW[8].

Trainees interested in short-tracking will enter the track during the R1 year (by December 31st). While their training will not be substantially different from that of other categorical UW residents, they will not be eligible for research electives given the compressed clinical training timeline and extensive research time expected following fellowship. The IM program maintains a list of faculty and projects and will work with each trainee to individualize their training pathway and identify a mentor who fits the trainee's future scientific interests. While the program does not guarantee fellowship match, trainees in the track are highly competitive for the subspecialty fellowship match and are highly desired by UW subspecialty fellowships as well as those of other institutions.


Application Process

Applicants should select either the categorical medicine (1802140C0) or primary care (1802140M0) tracks in ERAS. Successful applicants will, in addition to demonstrated clinical excellence in medical school, have extensive prior research experience, although obtaining a PhD is not required. Interested trainees are encouraged to contact the internal medicine Program Director or the Associate Program Director - Research and Scholarship at any time during the residency application process. The program will attempt to include interviews with physician-scientists as part of the categorical interview day, but the day is otherwise not substantially different from that of the other categorical applicants. Applicants who have identified specific faculty they wish to meet while at UW should contact the program to express their interest well in advance of the interview day, and the program will do its best to arrange these contacts, if not during the interview day then electronically or by phone.

Fellowship match is not guaranteed as part of the internal medicine ERAS application, but trainees in the pathway are highly competitive for fellowships, with 100% matching to their desired subspecialty between 2001 and 2016[8].
