Program Description

Baylor College of Medicine is proud to offer a new research track for qualified candidates, recently approved by the American Board of Pediatrics.The Pediatrician-ScientistT raining and Development Program (PSTDP) is an ideal career choice for MD or MD/MD-PhD graduates who are considering a career as a principal investigator or a pediatrician-scientist. As a partner with the largest children’s hospital and department of pediatrics in the United States, there is a strong commitment and priority to providing expert clinical training and educational opportunities in the context of formal research progression towards becoming an independent investigator.

PSTDP residents will commit to the American Board of Pediatrics-Integrated Research Pathway (ABP- IRP), which is a three year residency training program and will link to the categorical residency program for fulfillment of ABP requirements. The program is designed to create a clear pipeline from residency to a junior faculty appointment by offering a myriad of educational experiences, research opportunities, and career development. PSTDP residents will participate in the following components to promote the development as a clinician scientist: Formal Mentoring Program, Parallel Education Program, and a Pilot Grants Program. The ABP-IRP track allows pediatric residents the opportunity to complete 12 months of research starting in PL-2 and of the near entirety of PL-3 while also completing 22 months of core clinical pediatric residency. All PSTDP residents will fulfill all pediatric categorical residency program requirement. Upon acceptance into the program, it is required for candidates to commit to this pathway before starting the PSTDP program, as program commitments will begin just prior to the official residency start date. Fulfillment of both categorical and PSTDP program requirements will be closely monitored by the residency program director, associate director, along with PSTDP leadership. A resident individuated advisory committee that will consist of the resident’s education mentor, primary research mentor, PSTDP leadership, and other essential faculty will also regularly meet to support the residents matriculation through the IRP pathway.

• Engage talented MD or MD/PhD graduates committed to careers in academic medicine and the field of pediatrics
• Provide extensive road mapping and customized experiences to PSTDP residents to allow for an unprecedented dual training in clinical training and research
• Create a multi-faceted, long-term mentoring structure to support trainees during transition from residency to fellowship and ultimately junior faculty
