The Ichan School of Medicine offers two research-intensive residency programs in Psychiatry which provide substantial protected time for research:
The Physician-Scientist Research Track is designed for applicants who have a demonstrated interest and aptitude in psychiatric research, as it provides substantial protected time for research throughout residency training. While it is not limited to MD/PhD applicants, priority is generally given to those who have participated in substantial research activities prior to residency.
The Residency plus PhD Program is a groundbreaking, NIMH-supported program is the first and only one of its kind nationwide. Designed for residents ready to commit to both psychiatry and research, it offers a second path to MD/PhD training by longitudinally integrating clinical and research training over 7 years.

Program Description
Leveraging Mount Sinai’s culture of flexibility and innovation, we offer a wealth of raw materials for you to fashion into unique educational, academic, and professional experiences. We encourage new ideas. While we certainly excel in teaching the cores of clinical psychiatry, our research track curricula are to a significant degree emergent and individualized. We maximize flexibility, allowing for the growth of projects and independent thinking at an early stage. Beyond core requirements, we help you build your own experiences so that you can become a true specialist as a physician-scientist while you master the skills to provide the most effective treatments in your domain. Mount Sinai is a unique place to learn how to become a 21st century psychiatrist and scientist. Our top-notch faculty covers psychiatry’s ever-broadening field—including outstanding physicians in neuroscience, clinical research, and psychotherapy—and is unusual in that these divergent realms interact regularly, transcending the conceptual barriers that often separate “biological” models of mental illness from “mind.”
