Program Description

The pathology residency training program at the Medical University of South Carolina is an well rounded, integrated 4 year anatomic and clinical pathology program with a variety of training opportunities for residents. As our institution is the largest academic teaching hospital in the state, and we are the only pathology residency program in South Carolina, we receive a diverse variety of specimens that provide an excellent source of material for education and research.

Our training program is well balanced with abundant exposure to the areas of anatomic and clinical pathology and also allows several months that can be used for elective rotations in research or anatomic and clinical pathology subspecialties. We offer a variety of fellowships and our graduates have been successful in attaining fellowship positions of their choice, whether it be in house or at another institution. Likewise, our graduates have fared very well in finding employment after completing their training. While most of our graduates end up in private practice, a number of graduates have attained academic positions, including several within our department.

The MUSC Hollings Cancer Center received NIH designation in 2009 and has strong research footing with involvement of several colleges and numerous departments across the campus.
