Program Description

Short description of your program. The ABIM Research Pathway of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Maryland is an ideal training environment for aspiring physician-scientists. The University of Maryland is the oldest public school of medicine in the United States and has a long history of advancing the science of medicine. Significant research centers at the medical center include the Institute of Human Virology, the Institute for Genome Sciences, and the Institute for Global Health, while the overall research portfolio at the medical center spans from basic sciences to the most cutting-edge clinical trials.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program offers the Research Pathway for highly motivated trainees who have demonstrated a commitment to a career as a physician-scientist. Candidates may elect to short track and complete internal medicine training in 2 years instead of 3, advancing to fellowship in the PGY-3 year. The program provides 2-3 years of protected research time following fellowship, with a goal of launching an independent career with extramural grant support following that period. Trainees without a PhD are encouraged to enter the PhD for Clinicians program during their research years, with seven fields of study available.

Application Process

Prospective applicants should select the research pathway NRMP number in ERAS to apply. Immediately following submission of ERAS, candidates should complete the supplemental application. Applicants should include a letter from their research mentor as one of the four required letters in ERAS.

Applicants invited for interview will complete a 1.5 day interview to include meetings with internal medicine faculty and program leadership as well as subspecialty fellowship faculty and potential research mentors. The interview day is flexible, with the half day able to be scheduled for the morning or afternoon before or after the categorical internal medicine interview day. This interview day will also represent the subspecialty fellowship interview(s).
